I saw Brooklyn based rapper Zebra Katz perform at a club night a couple months back. His sensual, X-rated set, complete with gimp mask and leather getup was bizarre, but functioned as the perfect visual representation of his music. It’s patchy and low-fi, drawing all your attention to Katz’ provocative, ultra-slowed down snarling rap style. Zebra is an openly queer, black male rapper, and if you have read my thoughts on Macklemore, you know my stance on the importance of queer visibility in hip hop, and the need for marginalised musicians to be as visible as possible. While Katz is still fairly underground, tracks like Ima Read and W8wtf have set him well apart from other rising rap artists, he’s also well worth seeing live.
Zebra Katz will be playing at Birthdays on November 10.
