New Music: Tove Lo

This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that the Scandinavian music scene produces something golden, another of which is Tove Lo. On Tuesday she dropped her first EP Truth Serum and if you like your electronic bass lines laden with angst, then this is the EP for you.

Recent hit Not On Drugs opens the six-track EP with an extraordinarily hooky chorus driven by a potent beat which will make you press reply, while Paradise climbs from a leisurely to frantic pace and is pure dance number that wouldn’t be out of place on any Radio 1 playlist. Over is a breathy, electronic ballad and last years hit Habits is a gritty, intoxicant-fuelled insight into the pain of lost love. The real highlight is previous single Out Of Mind, a track which twists, turns and builds through shattered beats and emotive lyricism. The final set of pulsating bass lines come courtesy of a Hippie Sabotage remix of Habits titled Stay High. What seems on the surface a fun, edgy and all-in-all generic EP is actually so much more, it doesn’t lack for depth, and overall is a pure piece euphoric pop with a profound sense of realism.

You can stream Truth Serum on Spotify or purchase iTunes. Tove Lo is also playing The Great Escape Festival so is definitely another one to catch.
